I believe the symbol of this story is conscience. Because the conflict between Abigail and proctor's relationship which is jealousy which leads her to attempt horrific witchcraft in the woods. Accusations are thrown around, and Proctor is guilty, and Abigail a victim in disguise. Abigail finds money and asks Proctor to leave with her. He denies this offer and decides to play his fate. Abigail knows he will be sentenced to be hung. She breaks down knowing if he dies his death is on her conscience, and everyone else accused of witchcraft instead of her. This is an example of a main character with a symbol of conscience.
